![]() Leading up to the October 22nd virtual event, 200 Cocktail Boxes were delivered to residents and businesses across King Township and beyond – including Kleinburg, Tottenham, Woodbridge, Aurora and Newmarket. Now in its seventh year, this annual fundraiser has gained momentum as a tradition for many, and earned the reputation as ‘the cocktail party of the year’ in King. Sip & Savour 2020 – Home Edition knocked and the community answeredĪn unusual year called for an exceptional affair and that is what the King Township Food Bank’s Sip & Savour delivered with this year’s Home Edition theme. will that be the year to gather again on site to Sip & Savour? The Food Bank is already looking forward to 2022…. More bidders than ever recognized this opportunity as a win/win, bidding full retail (or over) on an item they might otherwise purchase, while supporting the work of the dedicated volunteers. While the exact proceeds are not yet known, the Silent Auction raised a record percentage of retail value of the donated items. Meline concluded the official speaking component of the ZOOM session with huge congratulations, gratitude and acknowledgement to all sponsors, donors, volunteers and participants of this year’s event. All of this increase in offerings is because of the increasing generosity of the sponsors, donors, and supporters of the Food Bank in general over the years, and Sip & Savour in particular, as this event is budgeted to raise over 1/3 of the annual cash needs. Eggs are now being offered on a regular basis, with the intent of making them available everywhere monthly. The produce assortment was expanded in 2020. He reported that because of community support, the per person food card allotment for perishables (the ‘dairy food card’) was increased this year. In this way, it is everyone’s project to ensure that nobody in King goes hungry. ![]() He commented that just as the Food Bank exists to serve the community, it exists at the pleasure of the community, and old fashioned term for saying that the Food Bank can’t do what it does unless there is community support. He stated that numbers are rising, but that the community has been very responsive. Mark Pavilons emceed for the 7th year, while Mayor Steve Pellegrini offered a timely toast as honouary chair of Sip & Savour, followed by KTFB Board member Geoff Simpson who spoke about the inner workings of the food bank as a totally volunteer-run organization that presently serves about 300 people. Over 40 people gathered for the short ZOOM presentation on Thursday October 21 at 7 p.m., where a ‘door prize’ sponsored by ICS Facility Services. The crates and contents were entirely sourced, arranged, and delivered by a team of highly-focussed volunteers in record time. Of course, it would not have been complete without the ‘sip’, and through partnership and donation, wine and cider were included, along with a packet of Apple Harvest Tea. In keeping with seasonal theme was a bag of King Daffodil bulbs to plant this fall for a spring bloom. Or you could munch on ready to eat roasted chestnuts by a fire lighted by hand crafted fire starters included in the crate. Something sweet to finish off? What else but a butter tart and fraktals. Recipients learned the benefits of burning beeswax with the donated tea light, and there were recipe cards to offer suggestions as to how to use the veggies, as well as how to preserve the gnarly gourd as a fall decoration. Also included in each Fall Harvest crate was a traditional wooden spoon, for preparation, crostini and olive tapenade as an accompaniment, and a microfibre towel for cleanup afterward. The crate included fresh produce, all the key ingredients to form a hearty soup, donated by local farms, as well as a jar of Friendship Soup – a soup in a jar concept generously donated and assembled by the local Trefoil Guild that only required meat (optional) and broth. This year’s theme of Fall Harvest featured a crate of seasonal goodness, delivered to the doorsteps of 150 ticket holders throughout King and beyond. KTFB board Secretary and volunteer Event Coordinator Meline Beach produced her 5th Sip & Savour fundraiser with the support of a number of new and tenured volunteers. Another banner year for Sip & Savour - Home Edition 2.0Īfter much deliberation (which delayed the implementation process) the Board of King Township Food Bank settled on Home Edition 2.0 for this year’s ‘Party of the Year in King’, a title Sip & Savour has laid claim to over the 8 years of its existence.
